Scientific
study shows that stimulants exert a positive effect on the biological
and cognitive processes that are thought to cause ADD. They improve
the inhibition of inappropriate responses and cognitive flexibility
and memory functioning rather than "doping children up"
or turning them into "zombies." But pharmaceutical drugs
like Ritalin and Focalin are known to be addictive
and to have some potentially harmful sife-effects.
Most
children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD) have a
positive response to stimulants, and most clinicians agree that stimulants
should be the first pharmacologic treatment of choice - what is called
stimulant therapy. But pharmaceuticals are often simply too harmful
in other concerns, and because nutrition plays such a central role in ADD, natural

fact, a comprehensive examination of this subject carried out at the
Montreal Children's Hospital discovered a startling fact. At the end
of five years, hyperkinetic children who received drugs (either Ritalin
or Chloropromazine) did not differ significantly from children who had
not received. Although it appeared that hyperactive kids treated with
Ritalin were initially more manageable, the degree of improvement and
emotional adjustment was essentially identical at the end of five years
to that seen in a group of kids who had received no medication at all.
